- What was decided/clarified?
- The discussion in this group was centered on funding. It was made clear that the selection of Nets4Dem's answer to the current Horizon is not sure, so there is a strong need to diversify the funding in a co-decided way. Monitoring of alternatives is ongoing but Nets4Dem is still not engaged in any. Different funding strategies emerged, but it was pointed out that Nets4Dem could need to diversify its scope of work too.
- Which are the main 3–5 key insights?
- - Other funding from EU-institutions exist right now or will be opened by the current MFF - Funding can also be achieved through award winning (i.e. Innovation in Politics Awards), some of them organised or sponsored by EU-institutions - Funding opportunnities exist in the private sector too: getting into media consortiums, doing consulting work, being an incubator of civic projects for impact, and much more. - Grant-dependency is dangerous, the pressure is increasing all around the world, NGOs dpending on USA funding got the lesson. As an example, when USAID was severely restricted, NGOs were redirected to a list of private donors which USAID would then refund.
- Recommended next steps (max 5)
- - Clarify Nets4Dem's own policy to receive funds (which organisations are targeted, accepted types of funding, limits, etc) in a co-decided way: need to agree on a wide compromise where different kinds of members would be allowed to introduce different kinds of funding. - Start looking seriously into the suggested funding alternatives: awards, current MFF, offering consulting work, private donors, etc. - Offer members more opportunities to connect with each other and share funding opportunities
- Risks/needs to watch
- - Nets4Dem bid for the current Horizon call may not be selected by the European Commission - The European Commission has been noted to make rather inconsistent evaluations in the past. - Beyond this call, Nets4Dem needs to avoid the grant-dependency trap
